Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industry Opens in Taipei

March 28, 2001

Asia has become the most important market for motorcycles in the world, both as a base for production and sales, announced Yen Kai-tai, chairman of the Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers Association (TTVMA), in a speech delivered March 13 in Taipei at the opening ceremony of the Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industry (FAMI).

Yen, also vice chairman of Yuelong Motor Co, Taiwan's biggest automaker, pointed out that more than 80 percent of the world's motorcycle consumption is in Asia. He said the formation of FAMI represents the unity of Asia's motorcycle manufacturers and noted that the Federation would be a great benefit and contribution to the promotion of motorcycle safety, environmental protection regulations and the elimination of international trade barriers.

With the formation of FAMI, interaction among Asian motorcycle manufacturers will increase, Yen said. The Federation is currently made up of eight member countries, including Japan, India, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Taiwan.

While they were in Taiwan, the TTVMA arranged for the Asian delegates to visit Sanyang Motor's factory in Hsinchu. Plans were also set for some delegates to call on the Environmental Protection Administration in Taipei.

The next FAMI general meeting will be held in the Philippines.
