April 26, 2001 The first Shanghai International Motorcycle Show, also known as Motorcycle Shanghai 2001, will be staged at the Shanghai International Exhibition Center August 8-12. The show is organized by the Chinese Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and is sponsored by the National Machinery Industry Bureau. Since 1990, four successful international motorcycle shows have been held in Guangzhou in southern China, all of which were widely acclaimed and supported by the industry. To date, the show is the biggest of its kind in Asia. In a bid to accommodate the rapid growth in China's motorcycle industry and its development of international markets, CCPIT has decided to expand the scale of the event and move it to Shanghai, which is becoming the country's leading venue for trade exhibitions. The show will be held once every two years. "We warmly welcome local and foreign friends and all those in the motorcycle industry to exhibit at or visit the show," said Wang Xia, a spokesman for the event. The organizers can be reached by email at exccpit@public.bta.net.cn or by fax at 86-10-68595076. Since restructuring and the liberalization of government regulations, China's motorcycle industry has been developing swiftly. In 1998, some 45 million motorcycles were registered. The output of motorcycles in 1999 reached 11.27 million units, of which 258,184 units were exported. As the world's biggest motorcycle producer, China makes up 50 percent of the world's total production. "Such a gigantic market and production capacity requires us to work out more effective marketing measures to make development more efficient," said Wang. "The staging of Motorcycle Shanghai 2001 is a prime example of one way we can accomplish this." Shanghai has always been China's leading business center. Its vibrant economic development has spread to nearby areas of the Yangtze River delta, making it one of the country's most active areas for industry and commerce. Under the influence of the government's liberalization policy, Shanghai has made major strides in terms of globalization. Additionally, the urbanization of the surrounding countryside has quickened, forming a big market for the consumption of autos and motorcycles. The excellent environment of Shanghai as an international city and its influence on eastern China and the country as a whole has created a favorable business opportunity for which to organize a major international motorcycle show. Motorcycle Shanghai 2001 will actively help promote international interchange and cooperation between China's motorcycle industry and the rest of the world as well as help develop the motorcycle market in eastern China.
